What is Stepover?

What is Stepover?

QUESTION:

What is Stepover?

ANSWER:

Stepover is defined as the the space between passes of a tool during an operation. The HSM default is 95%, making a very smooth finish on a surface with a ball end mill, but it will sacrafice machine time. In other words, it’ll take forever!  You can change it to 1/2 the tools diameter, and it will save you a significant amount of time!

In this photo, both parts are exactly the same with one exception: Stepover. Using a ball end mill the part on the left had a very small percentage of stepover compared to the part on the right. Which one do you think took longer to machine?
